EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
