Finest TV Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Films This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's daring critique examines the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to presenting a fitness program on TV. Forced aside by her slimy boss her manager Harvey, she turns to a secretive and gruesome process titled the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate named Sue, culminating in a progressively vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who takes some time off from reporting on global conflict to embark on a high-end voyage accompanied by an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy guests. Yet once a mysterious woman falls into the sea during the evening and all passengers claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

Presence

Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities in this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the CIA to gather intel on the potential kingpin, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, several child abductions has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. Yet the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, however the lead actress achieves to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This period's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked with uncovering a mole inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious mental battle of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors participate the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
