Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no new information.
