Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
