Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
